 Black Paint by Charles Bartolotta

January 2025 - Black Paint

About the Image(s)

Getting more use from the can of flat black paint, I painted this previously white pumpkin
black along with the two gourds that were part of a fall themed centerpiece. I placed
them on a sheet of black glass with a black velvet background. I plucked some red
maple leaves from my neighbor’s tree (they were all being blown off, anyway). The
lighting was from the open glass doors on the left with a foil fill card on the right.

Wow Charles!! The dynamics of your colors are very vivid. The reflection is there and has a ghost affect but is noticeable. Your lighting is perfect and I like how its visible on the entire image. Beautiful still life.   Posted: 01/04/2025 15:37:55

Thank you, Sharlana. I appreciate the comments. I really enjoy doing still life photography. I don't spend as much time outdoors now that the winter has set in here in the northeast, so I'll do more with still life.   Posted: 01/04/2025 15:53:28

Charles, this is a fantastic, very creative composition of three different and complementary colors, shapes and perfect lighting. The red border is a very nice touch. Very impressive photo, one I enjoyed spending time exploring all the details. I have steered away from still life's for lack of lighting knowledge and creativity, so your back story is encouraging to me and much appreciated. Perfect image!

Thanks, Jim. I've found that the simpler the lighting is the better it is. I did a lot of product photography years ago that required multiple lights, but since then I've found that unnecessary in still life. Window light and a fill card works well.   Posted: 01/18/2025 14:52:47
