About the Image(s)

Took this in Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. I was watching and photographing some Canada geese swimming with goslings when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was this raccoon watching the geese and me. I took about 8 shots before it turned and ran back into the tall grass. All except one image were out of focus, it was not easy to get focus through the grass, but I was very pleased I got this one.

I took it with an Olympus EM1 MK III, Olympus 300mm prime lens, 1/2000th sec, f/9, ISO 3200.

I made some minor adjustments in LR Basic module and added a few masks to highlight the raccoon and bring out the catchlights in the eyes.

Converted to B&W in Silver Efex Pro 2 using preset 13 Grad ND and added the border.

The conversion is brilliant, the detail and tonality you have gained from going mono is brilliant. There are some lovely tones in the grasses and those eyes grab you. Nice catch.   Posted: 07/09/2024 10:58:09

Dave, Ik really like this shot in B/W. I love the eyes glaring out at you. Everything is sharp as a tack. Jerry   Posted: 07/11/2024 16:35:19

Indeed a good conversion in B&W, and good cropped.
As you mentioned the most difficult in the circumstances (a lot of grass) is the AF. His attitude (eyes) is perfect.   Posted: 07/16/2024 23:37:33

David, what a great find "out of the corner of your eye." I agree that the conversion to black and white is really nice. I also like the bokeh in the foreground and distant background. Everything is in sharp focus and the raccoon's eyes tell a story! Very nice image.   Posted: 07/17/2024 21:01:33
