Abandoned School in Iceland by Kathryn Delany, QPSA

September 2023 - Abandoned School in Iceland

About the Image(s)

ISO 400, 1/125s, F/16, 35mm

This is an abandoned mechanics and engineering school in Iceland. I thought it would lend itself to black and white. I feel it maybe should be cropped in from the right to the post of the car

An interesting composition looking out through the old car/truck window to the school. I like the effect of looking through the window, I wonder if opening up the shadows some would make it even stronger. There is a lot to look at, a bit busy but I think it works and has good interest.

A thin stroke, for mine too, would be good to separate them from the background.   Posted: 09/05/2023 23:47:13
David thanks I have this version which has the shadows opened up a but like you suggested - I cropped it and shut down the shadows because it is busy what do you think?

I like this version even better, including a the side window adds more dimension and depth. Very strong.   Posted: 09/07/2023 09:21:00
Looking it the tiny thumbnail of the new version I can see your point of view! Thank you   Posted: 09/07/2023 09:35:50

I am going to stand up for version 1. I like the starkness it gives where as you say V2 gives this more open feel to the place. But it is start and derelict and broken, run down and its the sort of view you would get if they did a pan up in a movie. I really like V1 as it has this great feel about it that you lose when you open up.   Posted: 09/14/2023 06:03:03
Thanks Paul I appreciate your point of view. The crop does focus the attention.

I prefer V2. I like how you have brought the shadows out and have more of an idea of the scene through the window. In V!, the wagon tends to lend itself to making it feel busy, but you have corrected it in V2. Also, bringing out the shadows on the top has helped frame the view. In V1 I was not sure what I was seeing.   Posted: 09/14/2023 13:37:42
Fran, thanks you are right about bringing up the shadows and I agree that needs to happen. I love these discussions and getting everyone's point of view so to speak.   Posted: 09/15/2023 11:41:34

I like the idea of composition. A view through a window.
The V2 is well done (good process) but I (personally) choose the V1. We are less distracted by the second window. In fact they are two different pictures...
Of course, such pictures look this call the B&W.
It was possible to spend some time on place to take pictures.   Posted: 09/15/2023 10:49:27
Vincent, very good observation, but keeping the crop wide it does create a totally different feel and atmosphere to the close in crop. I did spend a fair amount of time on location, If I could go back I would one day and try it again.   Posted: 09/15/2023 11:43:25

Creative composition. To me the tonal range is very nice. I prefer version 1 because I get more of a feel of being in the vehicle looking out.   Posted: 09/16/2023 10:26:59
Ken thanks I think I do like V1 too

I would never have thought that it was a school? Your approach of looking through a window gives it a very unique composition. I like how you kept the building level. That and then all the old junk in fore ground really give this a very historic memory.

Good work.
