Brooklyn Bound by Carl Johnson

July 2024 - Brooklyn Bound

About the Image(s)

This was taken late evening from the Brooklyn Bridge heading towards Manhattan about 5 years ago. The whole dramatic scene drew my attention. I should have used a slower shutter to capture the traffic in motion, but the settings were on 'automatic' instead. This was processed primarily in Photoshop. I also applied some slight grain/noise and additional enhancements, but not sure if the grain was suitable for this type of capture.

The camera used was a hybrid Sony HX400V with settings at f/2.8, 1/80sec, ISO-1600, 4mm, no flash, and no tripod.

A very high contrast image that suits the scene quite well. Love the moodiness of the scene. All the noise in the sky is a bit distracting. Also make sure your building is vertical. They seem to lean over a bit   Posted: 07/07/2024 17:28:32

Thanks Francois for the much appreciated comments. I had't noticed the leaning buildings until now. I agree, the noise is a bit much.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:26:12

Interesting image, lots of things happening in this scene. Like Francois said, some of the buildings appear to be leaning to the right.   Posted: 07/08/2024 00:26:03

Thanks Marilyn for your thoughts...much appreciated. I'll go back and straighten the buildings. I hadn't noticed this before.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:29:46

This picture really captures the feel and the rush of the big city. I'm in agreement with Francois, the grain in the sky is distracting. But it's art so it's really a personal preference.   Posted: 07/08/2024 18:13:04

Thanks Lori for your comments, yes, after reviewing the grain/noise is a bit much and distracting. I'll try to re-work it.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:32:34

What this does for me is show how much camera's have moved on in the past five years, where now you have shoot this with no noise at 5000 ISO. I am sorry for me this does not work, the cars are cropped and the buildings are filled in to much, I also dislike noise. This is not one for me.   Posted: 07/09/2024 10:55:47

Thanks Paul for the much appreciated comments. I supposed if I'd used a slower speed showing the cars in motion, it would be more captivating. I agree that the noise is a bit distracting.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:42:41

First thing I notice is all the noise. Looks like a vintage photograph. If it were me, i would crop the cars out and just focus on the buildings. That white dot in the middle of the image is also very distracting.   Posted: 07/10/2024 03:20:10

Thanks Nanette for your comments. I also thought about cropping out the cars, but I also wanted to get the city movement feel to it. The bright light should have been toned down or removed completely. Much appreciated comments.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:47:43

I would move back further and take wider view on this location. Your black and white was great, but, like Paul said noise in this image too much for me.   Posted: 07/16/2024 01:56:49
