Sunset Departure by Paul Hoffman

October 2026 - Sunset Departure

About the Image(s)

We spent a lovely weekend at Portsmouth Harbour beginning of September and the weather forecast for the Friday night was heavy cloud, So we went for an early dinner and came out to this wonderous display. The sky was on fire and lasted for about 15mins and then just disappeared. Luckly the Britanny Ferry was just departing so gave me some scale for the image. Just love the wave and texture in the sky.

Gentle touch of correction and slight straightening but otherwise straight from the phone.

Quality of light/time of day is excellent, love the color. For me, I would have liked to maybe see this image with the camera tilted up a bit more as those clouds are definitely the star of the show so fill out more of the frame with the sky. I know the water rests on the rule of thirds, but it doesn't do much for me and I think with as much space currently given to the water, it actually detracts a bit of attention from the sky. As this image currently stands, I would crop out at least half the water from the bottom. This puts the horizon much lower in the frame but I think creates a more dynamic image.   Posted: 10/01/2026 18:56:12

Paul, this is a stunning image. The light and colour of the sky are simply incredible, and the fact that you caught this moment within 15 minutes makes it even more valuable. The ferry works beautifully as a scale reference - it doesn't compete with the sky, it emphasises its scale. And the fact that this was shot on a phone, handheld, at ISO 20 - that's admirable in itself. A very inspiring image.   Posted: 10/06/2026 10:28:41
