Strength of the Caryatids by Marilyn Peake

July 2026 - Strength of the Caryatids

About the Image(s)

I took this photograph of the Erechtheion, directly across from the Parthenon in Greece, during the evening golden hour of August 24, 2023. The Caryatid statues are actually replicas with the originals having been placed in museums to protect them from the weather of Greece.

I shot this handheld with a Nikon D7200, f/10, 1/400 sec., ISO-400. In Photoshop, I cropped the original photo, slightly sharpened it, and removed spots in the sky using the spot healing brush.

That must have been a breathtaking moment, to stand there a contemplate the history, ancient architecture, beautiful light, and listen for the echoes of voices of long ago. Thanks for sharing about your post production work as well, I should do that as well as the noting the camera settings n my posts.

Love the complementary colors in the sky and stone, the mysterious statues (gives the viewer something to wonder about and maybe research), and the 3/4 view of the structure. Great work.   Posted: 07/09/2026 02:39:22

Thanks so much, Stan. I did have a sense of awe seeing the remnants of ancient history up close.   Posted: 07/10/2026 00:18:34

Beautiful shot of the "Porch of the Maidens." How did you ever get this with no other tourists in the shot?   Posted: 07/14/2026 00:23:45

I also like the 3/4 view of this ancient structure as the sunlight only faces the front side. I also like how the complementary broken stones lead up to it giving a good sense of perspective.   Posted: 07/14/2026 03:13:42
