Bridge to Inveraray by Paul Hoffman

July 2025 - Bridge to Inveraray

About the Image(s)

There is a drive if you base yourself in Oban, Scotland. Had South out of Oban and turn left down the small valley road to Taynuit, One of the forgotten gems in Scotland. Then follow the mains road signs to Inveraray, where you will come to this bridge and the village set at right angle to you, you cannot miss it at most of the buildings are white and stand beautifully against the mountains and locks. In the harbour you will fine two tall ships that are very photogenic. This view of the bridge is from the end of the harbour wall.

Continue south on the coastal road to Lochgilphead where there was a nice tea rooms for lunch. Turn north back towards Oban along the coastal road, you could do diversions on B8002 with 6 miles of narrow room to spectacular view and then back again to main road and then further on the B844 to Seil peninsular which is lovely.

The alternative if you did not want to drive that far is go to Inveraray, then double back and take the B840 along Loch Awe, but this may take long as you stop every quarter of a mile to take pictures.

But back to Oban for tea and cakes and to review a grand day of image.

Lightroom and silver efex 7.

What's the building on the top of the hill ? All the trees very detail and sharp, make repetition and pattern. I would increase the light in the bridge below.   Posted: 07/11/2025 08:54:45

In general a good scape and good mono conversion. There is however a lot of texture in the image that you do ten to miss an item like the bridge a bit. It is therefore one of those images that would work better in colour dependant on what the color of the trees and the surroundings are

Hello Paul, an impressive view of the forested ridge and slope - love the single tower/building "crowing" the ridge line. The clouds add drama. There is a wide tonal range (lights-to-darks), which makes a nice monochromatic composition. The arched bridge over the water is a nice foundation for your composition.

Some thoughts:
I find eye switching from the ridge line near the top to the arched bridge down below. That is fine, but I think it might be better if one or the other was more dominant. Consider either cropping from the bottom to eliminate the bridge (thus bringing attention to the ridge line) or cropping from the top (calling attention to the bridge). (Or make two images - one of the ridge line and one of the bridge - !)
- I'd like to see more shadow detail in the trees; perhaps just slightly brightening the shadows would make your already-wonderful image even more wonderful!   Posted: 07/24/2025 16:14:31
