PURPLE CACTUS FLOWER by Yvonne Nystrom

May 2023 - PURPLE CACTUS FLOWER

About the Image(s)

"Purple Cactus Flower"
Camera: Nikon D7500
Lens: Tamron 90mm Macro
Settings: 1/320, F-9, ISO 100, Basic edits in Lightroom including the new Denoise.
Shot around 5pm in May 2022

I was out around my resort and found this beautiful purple flower on a cactus and loved how the light was hitting the petal and showed the purple color on the stamins. This was one of my first photographs using my new (at that time) 90mm macro lens.

I appreciate the sharpness of the stamin, but the softness of the center petals also grab my attention away from the main focal point. With such a varied DOF, if it were mine I think I would have either concentrated on the very center or backed away and used the macro lens as an ordinary one getting everything in focus.   Posted: 05/03/2023 18:11:36

I appreciate your observation on that. I didn't notice it until you mentioned it! Thank you!!   Posted: 05/03/2023 22:34:06

Gee! What vivid colors!

Wonderfully composed and exposed .... however, as Fred has mentioned, next time composing this or similar flower arrangements, be sure to "bracket" (which includes the idea of "working" the subject) compose using the Macro, and then back off, too. Change F/stop and focus points to experiment with Dof ... if your camera has Dof button, makes the process so much more satisfying.

In post-production then review an assortment of images and choose the one that best exemplifies the creative vision you feel is most engaging for you.   Posted: 05/04/2023 11:48:22

The POV is little different and probably lower f number has put all the petals out of focus. The saturation of the color of petals are high and did not merge with bokeh.while that is not always needed but I feel somehow it lacks the continuity of the tones from the petals to the background.
Denoise at ISO 100 may not nedded. Try Topaz sharpen on this and see the result. Nice work though.   Posted: 05/11/2023 20:59:59

Nice detail on the stamens. I agree with Fred's comments. Also you may want to try a square crop to just concentrate on the flower.   Posted: 05/12/2023 02:53:56
