About the Image(s)

Crowd Watching a Falling Girl

Years ago, I first saw Henry Moore’s drawing of ‘A Crowd Looking at a Tied Up Object’. I have wanted to do something like this for a long time. Recently, I was able to photograph a suitable group of people. I shot the falling girl in a studio some time back. It’s just a bit of surreal fun. One little coincidence; when my neighbour came in a few days ago he recognised himself in the crowd photo. I hadn’t realised he was there.

Different elements taken with different cameras including Nikon D800, Nikon Coolpix A, iPhone 16. Processed and composed in Affinity Photo 2.

Hi Robin, Happy New Year. Creative version of the artist's proof drawing. I've never been a fan of Borders, and yours cuts off the feet of the crowd. I would have liked to see your background image but appreciate inclusion of the drawing. I think a gradient could harmonize the (somewhat) voyeuristic image. I added a couple of warming gradients to your image.   Posted: 01/07/2025 16:09:39

Great composite and all power to your elbow for holding that sketch in your mind and finally giving it your own take. I too would like to see something for the girl to fall into - armchair, basket or trampoline?   Posted: 01/10/2025 20:34:01

A very creative and well constructed image. Like the story and concept. I have a bit of difficulty with the background as it leaves out what she is jumping from and into. Maybe that is what you intended - to make us think and create our own story. In any case, an interesting altered reality picture.   Posted: 01/09/2025 15:37:10

Excellent job on selecting your subjects and removing them from the background. I feel the textured background is a little distracting. In my opinion I think reducing the size of the crowd so they fit into the image and then try a sketch effect on the crowd and woman. For me a slight sketch effect would blend with the background. Perhaps angel type wings on the woman.   Posted: 01/11/2025 02:35:39

I played around with your image and thought I would share what I came up with- though I could find my angel decoration to get some wings from for the woman falling "from heaven". I added a slight gaussian blur to the background and repositioned everyone's head so the angel was more in line with the woman. I also made the image of the woman slightly smaller.   Posted: 01/22/2025 02:09:35

Fabulous creation. I wish I were half as creative as this   Posted: 01/16/2025 15:56:23
