About the Image(s)
A few years ago while in South Africa we were walking on
Shipwreck Beach at Cape Point (near Cape Town) when we came across this poor seal having got caught in a fisherman net. An ongoing problem for ocean life, I feel.
Shot at 1/800 F6.3 ISO160. In post I put it through ColorEfex Pro to make it pop more.

What a shame! Your composition says it all. Death and desolation. People not helping. Nothing to prevent the sadness of the slow death of the ocean. I have watched tv documentaries on these ocean problems. It is too bad that there isn't more mention of it in our society. You have emphasized the net around his neck with that color. Your message is loud and clear with no distractions.   Posted: 12/09/2025 00:18:59
When I chose this as my topic I was focused on the political landscape and protests happening throughout the country. I love seeing the broader interpretation of the topic. Your image shines a light on the lack of education or outright lack of care and intentional dangerous practices that threaten marine life and other wildlife. The inclusion of the beach with seaweed and "driftwood" adds an element emphasizing death. I might crop out the blue area as it pulls my eye away from the seal. However, maybe not as it adds a sense of where the seal came from.   Posted: 12/10/2025 02:18:39
This is a very impactful image. It points out how dangerous debris in the ocean is to the sea life. I helped clean up a beach in Haida Gwaii last year, and I couldn't believe the amount of fishing debris and other assorted items--hard hats, shoes, plastic buckets, lots of nets, and just random junk. On the West Coast, it primarily comes from the far Pacific, carried by currents, and deposited in the winter.   Posted: 12/14/2025 03:30:21
