About the Image(s)
A Well-worn Road at Bechers Bay. A weathered wooden pier reaches toward the island, marking the start of a road that once carried ranchers, sheep, and soldiers across Santa Rosa. The hum of engines and the clatter of hooves have long faded; now only hikers follow its dusty path. Part of Channel Islands National Park since 1980, the island has set its roads free from wheels??”inviting silence, wind, and footsteps to reclaim the way.
Santa Rosa is one of the more remote Channel Islands, accessible only by boat from the mainland of California. Sea conditions can be quite rough. I was lucky to travel there on a calm day. Just a few days later, boats trying to reach the island did not succeed.

Lightroom. I thought there was too much blue sky, so I cropped it. I also warmed the colors.
