Demonstration of Dexterity by Lisa Salisbury Hackley

July 2025 - Demonstration of Dexterity

About the Image(s)

I chose to go with the broader interpretation of dexterity: "readiness and grace in physical activity." This is one of the images that I took of a very talented group (total of about six people) performing at a local cultural festival. Their performance was beautifully choreographed and dexterious.

Hi Lisa,
I like that you cropped to the subject! I can see this image printed and framed, placed on a wall that has a narrow area for an image. Your image capture the "grace in physical activity" as well as the focus and control needed to perform like this. I flipped the image so that up is down, and down up, and it is also quite interesting. the smile on the girl's face shows such joy. Nice work!   Posted: 07/18/2025 05:20:31

Thank you Bunny. I shoot a lot of musicians and groups, and initially I was going to use a closeup image of a musician's hands playing an instrument. Then I decided it would be fun to broaden the scope of the topic with this image. I had another image with six of the performers but decided the focus on the two was more reflective dexterity.   Posted: 07/23/2025 18:56:30

The crop is perfect for this image and takes my eye from top to bottom. Perfect symmetry also so well captured. The red and black of their costumes blend well with the white and grey background.   Posted: 07/18/2025 22:22:10

Thank you Ally. I prefer this image over some of the others that I took (with more members of the group included) for this very reason. I like the tight crop which emphasizes the symmetry (and how straight these two are - also reinforced by the upright glass in the lower left corner).   Posted: 07/23/2025 19:00:37

Great choice for the topic, and the vertical emphasis makes it. As I study it closely I see the man's face is reddened with the effort of holding her up and his position; the girl, on the other hand, just looks comfortable!   Posted: 07/20/2025 00:09:48

Aha Nancy. I did not notice his face!   Posted: 07/23/2025 19:01:43

The most important element of this photo is the hands. Otherwise, boom, no balancing! Even the lovely bright red outfit didn't deter me from thinking about the job those hands are doing. The background is intriguing. Looks like the man is hanging off a curb. that would make this pose even more impressive. The girls red outfit is pretty and reminds she is just a little girl doing a fantastic balancing job.   Posted: 07/28/2025 20:35:41
