Dexterity - The Calligrapher by Carole Kropscot, FPSA

July 2025 - Dexterity - The Calligrapher

About the Image(s)

Here is a calligrapher finishing her work. She works with a real calligraphy pen with its own special nib and real ink (the kind that stains your clothes!). She is my daughter, and she actually has her own business doing this! I asked her to pose for me with the special card for Mother's Day. The card is on my refrigerator door now. She was writing these cards for attendees at a special event at Powell Gardens (the botanical garden for Kansas City). I posed her hand on my coffee table next to window light in my livingroom. Attached is a closer view of the pen in her hand. Iphone photo with no editing except sizing for our website.

Calligraphy is such an art and your daughter very talented! A beautiful card and seeing the calligraphy pen really adds a dimension to this image. How long does she take to write a card? I think you have posed the hands very nicely too.   Posted: 07/16/2025 22:20:01

The time it takes is simply the time to slowly print each letter. So not very long with this specific lettering style. But she does dip the pen in ink several times.   Posted: 07/28/2025 20:16:13

Hi Carole,
Calligraphy is an amazing art. I say this as someone who failed handwriting in grammar school. When I thought of dexterity, calligraphy hadn't come to mind. But now that I see your picture, this is a wonderful "dextrous" image. While your tighter crop has some merit, I do enjoy seeing the entire message. Fabulous!   Posted: 07/18/2025 04:55:21

I don't have much to add here! I had trouble figuring out what was going on with the pulled back version; I couldn't see a nib at all, but It does lose something with only the partial message visible and all that beautiful artwork excluded. Really beautiful work!

I agree with Bunny - calligraphy did not come to mind for me either. However, this image definitely says dexterity. I actually like the tighter crop (surprise!) as it gives more of a focus on the hand doing the writing.   Posted: 07/23/2025 19:05:12
