Monochromatic - Rafferty by Lisa Salisbury Hackley

April 2025 - Monochromatic - Rafferty

About the Image(s)

Rafferty is our local zoo's Amur Leopard. While I liked the original image in color, I love the intensity and striking look of the image in black and white. I also think the monochromatic range of tones brings out the texture. I did play around sepia tones but I prefer the more dramatic look of black and white.

Rafferty doesn't seem that pleased but he makes a very striking image! There is alot of tonal variations in this black & white version which holds my attention. I might have darkened the background a bit to make Rafferty stand out more.   Posted: 04/08/2025 21:31:10

This is a very dramatic image. The DOF nicely separates the leopard from the background. I would like to see just a little more brightness/contrast. I used levels to brighten the whites and midtones just a little. Then his left eye seemed too dark. When I enlarged it in order to select just the eye, I was amazed at the detail you captured. Wow! Good job.   Posted: 04/15/2025 15:54:19

A leopard is a great choice for a monochrome image. (I just saw a wild one in South Africa. Awesome creatures). Nice job capturing this fierce pose.

I agree with Ally on darkening the background. I attached a version that might be too dark for you preference, but it removes the box in the background which is a giveaway that the animal is captive. I also cropped the bottom to remove the object in the left-hand side. (Border control! Little things like that draw the eye.) Finally, using the histogram, I expanded the range (much like Connie). LMK what you think.   Posted: 04/15/2025 16:33:22
