Something That Doesn't Exist in Reality - Not of This World - In the Abstract by Lisa Salisbury Hackley

December 2024 - Something That Doesn't Exist in Reality - Not of This World - In the Abstract

About the Image(s)

This was a challenging topic, but I decided that an abstract photo would work. Last February I finally got to get to Lake George, NY for the WInter Realms event. Unfortunately, the entire format had changed and it was very disappointing. The best part of the event was the ice sculptures. In addition to taking documentary type photos, I wanted something different - not recognizable and more artistic. This is one of my favorites which became what I would term a "not of this world" image with a combination of colors, tones, reflections, and shapes from the colored lights through the ice; creating a fun and unrecognizable final image. I did a bit of cropping and minor adjustments for exposure and saturation. IN this way I created some image stat I really liked out of what was a fairly mundane setting.

I like the purple and blue color palette, maybe because it reminds me of a print dress I loved when I was younger. Also, these cold colors remind me that you took this picture of ice in a brrrr setting! In a sense, your image did exist in reality as the viewer is looking at the ice! You caught both reality and non-reality in one shot. The design keeps my eyes in the picture. I would like the picture even if the right side was at the top if you rotated the image.   Posted: 12/11/2024 22:06:08

I had so much fun taking a series of these images (despite my disappointment with the overall venue). Maybe a wall art series in the making?

The colors are fantastic and the shapes and patterns created are other-worldly. Congratulations on searching beyond the obvious for new images. Hmmm. Carole's comment about rotating the image sounds good. How about putting that orange stripe at the bottom to make a base?   Posted: 12/12/2024 11:37:12

Now the picture looks like fantasy hands reaching across the screen. Spooky! But fun because of the colors and the liquid-like look!   Posted: 12/19/2024 00:45:59

Thanks Connie. I like this orientation. What is fun about an image like this is that you can rotate and crop in different ways to create a range of different images from the original.   Posted: 12/19/2024 03:11:35

What makes this photo work for me is the color palette, and I love the background story you gave us about its creation. This is a very soothing image, one of those things you can enjoy looking at for a long time. The shapes suggests a lot of movement to me even though from what you described maybe nothing was actually in motion? Nice work Lisa.   Posted: 12/18/2024 22:51:45

Thank you Nancy. No motion at all...just the reflection of colored lights through the ice sculptures. The shapes and depth of the ice sculptures contributed to the patterns and flow in the final image.   Posted: 12/19/2024 03:09:49

I can feel the ice in this image! It reminds me of a kaleidascope which i used to have as a child. Lovely colours which blend so well together. Definitely an abstract wall hanging.   Posted: 12/21/2024 19:53:15
