Flowers of Wales by Ruth Mayer

July 2024 - Flowers of Wales

About the Image(s)

Earlier in June I was lucky to get to go Wales. One of the places that we visited was the National Botanical Garden of Wales. Taking pictures of flowers there is endless. It was just fantastic. They have a lot of flowers that are not growing in their natural environment anymore. Can I say this place was huge. I wish I knew the name of this flower, but there was so much to take photos of I didn't get the name. 1/100 sec, f/8 @ ISO 320. Edited it in PS with some creative license cropping. Something different.

According to the app 'Picture This', the name of the species is Bird's-eye Gilia. Very pretty, and what an exciting place to visit! I'm not familiar with the cropping style you refer to, but I wonder what the original image looks like. Since the sprigs of flowers are fairly spaced out, I think I would have concentrated on the middle grouping which appears to be in the sharpest focus. I love that you captured the natural surroundings of the flowers as it gives context to the image.   Posted: 07/16/2024 17:06:13

Hi Ruth: Beautiful flowers. I think I would have cropped the lower flowers out of the photo since my eyes are traveling all over the image. Sometimes less is more.   Posted: 07/17/2024 16:57:05

Actually Ruth, I would crop the top flower because it shows the nature of the vine the flower lives on, and the size of the bloom relative to the blur of the vine. It could also be a horizontal, which might be more comfortable.
For a wall hanging - i really like the long thin set of flowers.   Posted: 07/20/2024 15:17:49

What an experience it is to photograph subjects in other lands. I think Wales would be such an interesting place to visit. And what a treat to photograph in a Botanical Garden, such a variety of local vegetation. Your creative license in cropping is interesting and it looks as though several of us have our own interpretation. But it seems everyone's attention seems to go to the center grouping of flowers. As Lori said, "sometimes less is more." Like Melissa, I chose a horizontal format. I like the way the blue blossoms contrast with the rocks in the background.   Posted: 07/22/2024 03:18:21

Thank you I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish, but I like the contrast of the flowers to the background. They were spread out, and I was trying to include all of them.   Posted: 07/23/2024 19:16:05

Hi Ruth,

This image captures my attention. To me, the contrasts and flower details are beautifully captured. The creative cropping appeals to me because the arrangement of the different groups of bird-eye gilia throughout the composition suggest a sense of rhythm to me.   Posted: 07/28/2024 00:58:35
