Owl Butterfly Larva by Melissa Cramer Sonnen

July 2024 - Owl Butterfly Larva

About the Image(s)

This image was in a butterfly garden in Houston. The Owl Butterfly eats juicy fruits and sugarcane. This little baby was crawling on a plant, but he readily wandered on my waiting finger for a portrait. The shot was made with my trusty Nikon Coolpix L840, ISO 100, f/4.8, 1/60 second. This is just a "snapshot" camera, but it takes good photos. I would love comments.

I'm impressed that you could hold this thing in one hand and shoot this close with such precise focus! You managed to capture fine details of this little creature. Great job!   Posted: 07/05/2024 22:03:06

Thanks. I really LOVE being in a butterfly house, even with the humidity. You can't find these little guys in your garden very often !   Posted: 07/08/2024 14:36:18

What a cute little guy. Very nicely done with one hand on the camera.   Posted: 07/17/2024 17:01:22

Melissa, Owl Butterfly Larva is a great find and your capture is very interesting. The detail is most interesting to me. Having done some nature photography myself, I understand the problems we face when shooting in the field. It would have been a bit more realistic if your subject was on a twig or a leaf, more of an environmental portraiture. I have never "hunted' in a butterfly house, but I bet the possibilities are endless. I look forward to seeing more of your nature photography.   Posted: 07/22/2024 01:22:10

I love being in the butterfly house. Always opportunities for photo's Nice closeup. I agree with James, that it would be better on a green leaf.   Posted: 07/23/2024 19:37:22

Hi Melissa,
I agree, this is a great find! To my eye, the details are beautifully captured and the black background adds a sense of drama.

Although capturing the Owl Butterfly larva on a green leaf or twig might be more realistic, observing it on your finger conveys an affectionate, personal tone that I find pleasing. Thanks for sharing this interesting and fun shot!   Posted: 07/28/2024 01:23:31
