Mum Floating in Crystal by Charissa Lansing

July 2024 - Mum Floating in Crystal

About the Image(s)

This is another attempt at photographing a flower floating in a crystal bowl. I chose to process this in B&W to emphasize the patterns of the white flower petals and those of the crystal bowl. Green flannel fabric was used for the original background.

Camera specs: Shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a 100mm macro lens (set to 1/13 sec, F/10, ISO 200) mounted on a tripod. I look forward to any suggestions. Thanks!

Charissa - I liked last month's image - quite similar. BUT this mono is really THE BEST. The lack of color lets my mind process the textures much easier. The contrasts are wonderful. Also, I appreciate the perfect focus on all parts of the flower, and also in the glass. That's not an easy task. The reflections on the fluted bowl lead the eye back into the subject flower. And even the background texture is just enough. Great image.   Posted: 07/08/2024 14:41:16

I prefer the B&W version over it being color, but I'm a bit confused as to what the image represents. Is it about the nicely focused, straight-petals flower, or the crystal swirling bowl below. You said you chose to emphasize the patterns of the white petals of the flower and that of the crystal bowl but to me the two different patterns cause much tension. Perhaps it's just me, but it seems as though an abstract of the two patterns together might be a better alternative.   Posted: 07/16/2024 16:47:05

I'm not sure if I agree with Karen or disagree. You would have to try without the glass bowl to know for sure. What I do know is that your use of mid-tones in this image is excellent. There is a lot of texture in this photo, and you handled it well.   Posted: 07/17/2024 17:06:23

Charissa, I LOVE the B/W image. The overall sharpness is spot-on. Reminds me of some of Cunningham's Magnolia images. Using the tripod is a definite advantage. Have you thought of using a smaller aperture, say f/16 or even f/22. And you might try a black or a white background with no texture, putting all the viewer's attention on the flower and the crystal bowl. I think this image is a great improvement over your June submission. NICE WORK!   Posted: 07/22/2024 02:17:38

Very nice. I like the monochrome. I think I would try a white background. It would really make the bowl and flower stand out.   Posted: 07/23/2024 19:39:53
