Christmas Cactus by James Silliman

December 2025 - Christmas Cactus

About the Image(s)

Just prior to Thanksgiving my wife and I were visiting her sister in Asheville, NC. Mary has an arboretum on her back porch. Among her many plants was a Christmas Cactus. I thought this would a good opportunity for me to for me to experiment with the “focus stacking” technique. Well, you know the old saying, “The best made plans of mice and men often go awry.” Robert Burns must have been a photographer (LOL). I made approximately 40 exposures of the plant, planning to assemble the final image when I returned home. Well, that was not meant to be. It seems I have used too much memory and Photoshop could not complete the task at hand.
So, I decided to go ahead and share one of the images with you. I found this one particularly interesting because a portion of the petal of the flower was in select focus and the pistil was in focus. But notice the ant. Believe it or not, that ant remained motionless for the entire process.
Image was made with my 105mm Macro mounted on a Nikon D610, 200 ISO. Exposure was made 1/125 sec. @ f/4.2
