Hummer by James Silliman

April 2025 - Hummer

About the Image(s)

Once again, I am digging deep into my archives of close-ups. We have had a stretch of really bad weather and my schedule of late has been very busy.
I have always been enamored by the grace and beauty of the hummingbird. I have several feeders in my yard. One of those feeders is located just outside my office window. This month’s submission is the result of one of those rare moments I was able to “catch” a hummer at the feeder. As Spring approaches, I am hoping I can make some new images of these magnificent birds.
This image was made with my Nikon D100 and a Nikkor Telephoto. Exposure was at f/5.6 at 1/60 sec. I normally rely on natural light, but this time a flash was used.

Really nice tack sharp image, Jim and the lighting is great on the hummer. You didn't say anything about the background which almost looks like you may have replaced it, but the shadows from the bird would indicate otherwise. Not sure how well you know PS and the AI capabilities, but I would add some canvas to the viewers left and the bottom so that you could fix the wing and tail that cut snipped off.   Posted: 04/13/2025 13:51:38

This is a much better shot than I have tried to get on a hummingbird. You really need to set your shutter speed high and put your ISO on auto. I agree with Karen that the background could use some work. All and all...very nice.   Posted: 04/15/2025 18:40:51

Hi Jim,
What a wonderful catch! I love the sharp focus on the face of the hummer. Thanks for sharing this beauty.   Posted: 04/16/2025 13:59:07

I love that little hummingbirds eye. I might have tried to lighten just the hummingbird. The red feeder has great color, but that is what my eye goes to before the hummer.   Posted: 04/19/2025 22:04:38
