Eye Catching Orchid by Karen Botvin

April 2025 - Eye Catching Orchid

About the Image(s)

Every March, our camera club gets invited to the Jacksonville Orchid Show on a Sunday morning before it’s opened to the public. This orchid caught my eye from across the room as it was up high and off my itself. I was fascinated by the composition and the black background. Not much editing other than to lift the shadows ever so slightly and drop the highlights. I captured this, not only handheld but also holding the camera over my head and using the back screen to see what the camera was seeing. Using my 105mm macro lens, my settings were ISO 4000, f/5.6 at 1/50sec. Let me say that the lighting in the venue wasn’t the greatest and there were others with flashes going off around me. I was really happy to capture this. Your comments are always welcome.

The positions we get ourselves into to try and get the shot we want. Good job. The flowers are lovely. I have orchids are home and are waiting for the blossoms to open.   Posted: 04/15/2025 18:37:00

The orchids are lovely and I can appreciate the technical difficulties!

Here is another interpretation...see what you think...

Thanks, Charissa. Your edits are a bit over processed for my liking! The orchids lost their softness. Not my style.   Posted: 04/17/2025 10:33:44

Very nice. I belong to the Orchid Society here. Orchids are my favorite flower. I used to grow a lot of them. This is a lovely pink phalaenopsis. I like how you included the buds and the stem. Kind of like leading lines.   Posted: 04/19/2025 21:42:15
