March 2025 - Hibiscus

About the Image(s)

This image is from my archives. I enjoy visiting local nurseries looking for possible subjects for my close-ups. I found this hibiscus at one of my usual haunts. This image was made with a macro lens mounted on my Nikon D200. Exposure was made at f/5.6 @1/80 sec. I probably should have used a smaller aperture to get a bit more DOF, but the camera was hand-held. I committed the cardinal sin of photographic omission…….sI forgot to take my tripod on this shoot.

Lovely image as it is, Jim! The color is great and reds are a tough color to shoot. If your f stop would have been smaller, the back petal would have been in shaper focus and the stamen would not have been as showy as it is now. I think it's perfectly captured.   Posted: 03/11/2025 14:24:54

Thank you Karen. DOF is a tough issue. There are those who like maximum DOF and those who like selective DOF. I think it should be left to the intent of the photographer and the subject matter.   Posted: 03/11/2025 20:06:15

Wow, Jim! I love the clarity of the stamen details and they draw my eye to these interesting features. I agree that selective focus is the photographer's preference and do admire what you have done with this image.   Posted: 03/24/2025 20:58:15

I agree, with Karen and Charissa. It's all about the stamen! Maybe crop a little of the top green out. I love it.   Posted: 03/25/2025 18:30:54

It is definitely selective focus. Nice colors. Isn't that fine "hair" on the end of the stamen amazing. You don't see that very often!   Posted: 03/25/2025 19:54:43
