Bud and Hand by Charissa Lansing

December 2024 - Bud and Hand

About the Image(s)

I am drawn to hands and want to improve photographing them. I photographed my own hand for this image and realized how difficult it was to hold still!

The image was registered with a Canon 5 D Mark III DSL, mounted on a tripod, using a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens at the following settings: 2.0 sec, f/11, ISO 200. Natural window light was used and a piece of black velvet, placed a few feet away from the subject served as the background. The rose bud was shed from a spray rose .

It surely is a tiny bud, with good color rendition, and the hand (nice manicure!) has a good set of flesh tones too. The subects are well brought out on the black bakground. I do think that the whole image needed a better focus. Seeing that you had a tripod set up, try a remote timer and multiple bursts per shot. You can then pick the best focus.   Posted: 12/11/2024 17:13:18

Thanks, Melissa. Yes, I definitely should have shot bursts, as I was working the camera while posing. Thank you!   Posted: 12/11/2024 23:40:40

For how you set up the photo you did well. My camera is so heavy I can't even hold it with one hand. I agree with Melissa. Next time set up the tripod with a timer. Years ago I did a small series titled with these hands. I wanted to capture elderly hands at busy work. Keep it up.   Posted: 12/16/2024 22:15:01

I agree with what others have already said, however, to me, the balance of the size of your hand in the frame feels too close, or too big. I would encourage you to try different poses with your hand holding the flower.   Posted: 12/16/2024 23:08:00
