About the Image(s)
This is a light fixture on the ceiling of the refurbished Liberty
Theatre in Astoria, Washington. The theatre dates from 1923. I turned
my camera to the ceiling, put my viewfinder to the side, and tried many
times to center this photo before finally getting it. I processed it in
Lightroom and in Photoshop. In PS I took off light fixtures and removed
a few distractions, then darkened the corners and used a square crop to
get the artistic original effect of the ceiling art. ISO 6400, 15mm,
f7.1, 1/25 sec.

Hi Lauren, What a challenge to get a sharp image of such a dimensional subject as shown by the added image. Great job in replacing a light and correcting for the bright downlights. You successfully found the center spot, too. It's a beautiful old theater. You captured the ceiling well in great detail, warmth, and beauty. Karl   Posted: 05/11/2023 10:37:30
Thank you Karl for your encouraging words!   Posted: 05/11/2023 15:43:51
Amazing shot! My first reaction was of looking up into a domed ceiling. When I saw your side picture I marveled at your precise positioning of the camera. Your removal of the light fixtures in post processing reveals the artistry of the design. There is just one tiny artifact: it looks like a small horizontal crack just left of center bottom rim. I don't see it in the original. This image would make both a great memory prompt and notecard.   Posted: 05/13/2023 16:40:28

Definitely worth the effort you took in placing yourself directly under - and well done for think of doing so. The shadows in the outer circle that so enhance the cornicing (?) come through really well.
My instinct though would be to spin the image a little so that the outer circles are NSEW - just my brain perhaps.   Posted: 05/14/2023 20:17:03

I just taught a lesson to elementary school kids on the compass rose - Never Eat Soggy Waffles! I like this.   Posted: 05/15/2023 12:12:45
I love this image, which is both a technical feat and shows real old-world elegance and beauty. The yellows and golds are truly captivating. Hard to choose between Lauren's and Gerard's versions, for both are gorgeous.   Posted: 05/15/2023 17:46:38
