About the Image(s)

Title: Synchronized Rowing Training

On our visit to Bilbao-Basque Country in Spain, on Sunday morning before we were heading to Madrid, I wanted to photograph the Guggenheim Museum from the other side of the river, and to my surprise there was a team of synchronized rowing training at the supervision of its trainer on a side little boat but making sure the athletes were keeping the cadence. I took a whole sequence of images and selected this showing the moment the paddles came out showing dripping water.

The image was created with a Nikon D950 with the Nikkor zoom lens 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 85 mm and with these settings: ISO 1400, f/9 and 1/800 sec. The image was PP in LightRoom and cropped.

I am adding a second image when they were in front of me and at a different stroke stage, for illustration purposes. Also, a link which shows all the extensive Crew Glossary (https://www.mcleancrew.org/crew-terminology)

Hi Isaac. Thanks for entering a photo of a sport that we have not seen covered in this or other groups, synchronized rowing. I have never heard of synchronized rowing, in this case 14 members are on the craft. Eights rowing yes but 14 no. The only issue I have with the photo is that it does not show any intended movement it appears rowers are resting or about to start. Is synchronized rowing an expressive unified set of movements like synchronized swimming in which points are scored for a wide range of synchronized movements? With normal rowing it does not matter whether rowers are synchronized its getting to the line first. An Australian women's rowing team had the issue of a non synchronized rower in the 8's in the Olympic Games she cost the team a place in the final, Australia was one of the favourites. After Olympics she was dropped from the team and I assume was told to concentrate on singles.   Posted: 05/05/2023 01:40:25

Isaac, I hope you had a great time in Spain while I was in Florida. I took soccer teams to San Sebastion Which is near Bilboa and loved it there. Several of my posts on this forum have been from there. Your image is sharp and does show the coordination of the team. I might suggest cropping out he top inch to eliminate the geometric patterns on the bank. Just of your information, I ran into Erik Rosengren at the Alligator farm, an he spoke very highly of you as a photographer and friend. Bruce   Posted: 05/05/2023 14:59:11

Hi Isaac, I must confess that I have not yet heard of synchronous rowing. The fact that the oar blades are above the water and the dripping water from the oar blades underlines for me that you have triggered at the right moment. For me, your photo also has documentary character for a little-known sport.   Posted: 05/15/2023 02:19:09

A new sport to me, have never heard of synchronous rowing. I find the top section a bit distracting and think a lower top from the top would improve the image. Great timing to capture the oars just leaving the water. I like the stance on the guy steering the boat, he appears to be working harder than anyone else in the boat   Posted: 05/18/2023 03:29:50

I like the action and the composition, and I think the pylons or structure at the top of the frame is OK. It provides a little sense of place or context. I thought the photo lacked a little pizzaz, so I darkened the lights and lightened the darks, reduced the overall brightness, and added a little contrast. This seemed to bring out the reflections and the colors.   Posted: 05/24/2023 22:22:14
