ICM by Robert Barley

About the Image(s)

A local group was investigating intentional camera movement, aka "ICM," this past month. I downloaded a copy of Slow Shutter Cam and experimented with my iPhone. This is one of the images - which I edited in Snapseed to improve vibrance, but not much else. It was an interesting thing to try and the app worked well for this purpose.

Nice work Bob. I like ICM images and usually have to make many tries to finally get something that I like. It's fin to explore like this with our cellphone and get very artistic results. ICM could be a fun assignment. Jerry   Posted: 05/02/2023 08:33:04

Thank you, Jerry, for your comments. I agree that ICM isn't as easy as it seems. I captured a number of images that I just deleted after looking at them. One issue I have with the Slow Shutter Cam app is that it doesn't keep all of the image. Not sure if I'm using it incorrectly, but the output doesn't contain the entire scene I saw on the iPhone screen, and the output is just 720x960. I'll have to keep working with it.   Posted: 05/02/2023 16:25:59

I have played with ICM off and on for years. Your image is one of the most interesting I've seen. As Jerry says, it is fun to explore. Nice work.   Posted: 05/02/2023 19:18:46

Thank you for your comments. Like you, I've tried ICM over the years. I have some older DSLR shots that may be interesting, but I haven't stuck with it enough to make many good images. I'll keep fiddling with it occasionally and see what develops. (Pun intended.)

A neat ICM image. The location of the trees and other things make for a very unique scene. Thanks for showing us the ICM image. Nice work Bob.   Posted: 05/03/2023 08:10:17

Thanks, Dave, for your comments. I think ICM is interesting, but it isn't for everyone. I don't think I would submit an ICM shot to a competition unless that was the requested genre.

This is a good result from an interesting experiment. Worth playing around and seeing what happens.   Posted: 05/05/2023 14:07:40

Thank you, Sol, for your comments. It was something to try doing with my iPhone. The results were satisfying, but not exactly amazing. I'll have to keep working on it and see if I can get better results.

Hope you and your wife are on the mend.

I have done ICM with my regular camera and had fun with it but it takes many tries to get something good. I have never tried with my phone but you have inspired me. Groves of trees are fun to do especially aspen or poplar trees in the fall. You did well.   Posted: 05/13/2023 14:55:57

Thank you for your comments. I agree that it takes practice to get something interesting. I was out this morning with an old DSLR (no real concern about sharpness with ICM) trying to capture some shots. Out of a dozen tries, I may have two that could be just okay. More practice is required! I like your idea of a grove of aspens. I'll have to try that.
