About the Image(s)

This image was taken at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. I noticed this man standing in front of the large picture window overlooking the courtyard, and I grabbed a quick shot before he moved away. I liked the simplicity of the image although it took quite a bit of post processing to remove from the photo the table, chairs and garbage cans in the courtyard. Shot with a Ricoh GR III. Exposure was 1/320 sec @ f/4.0 and ISO 200.

Love this image which has a sense of mystery to it. It was nice of him to stand off center for you! Your post-processing was very good. The contrast and tones are perfect. The diagonal shadows across the building in the background just add to the interesting lines. Well seen and nicely done.   Posted: 05/06/2023 09:38:09

I didn't realize how much impact his standing off-center had until you mentioned it. I submitted this image to our camera club's monochrome competition this month, and it took first place. When discussing the image, I mentioned his standing off-center. Thank you, Cindy!   Posted: 05/13/2023 07:15:58

Very nice capture. Even though the man is on the right side of the window his body has a kind of lean to his stance that brings your vision to the background. You've done such a good job to eliminate distractions and focus on the patterns of shadows and shapes. Well done!   Posted: 05/09/2023 11:07:25

Thank you, Phyllis! Yes, it took a lot of time and patience to get rid of those pesky distractions.   Posted: 05/13/2023 07:16:57

Oh, good eye, good catch and good execution of Post proc, that really clean up the image. I like it!
I noticed that you use Gr3 on this image, I's think about it, would you share your thought on using GR3, and what stand out vs using a cell phone, eg. iphone 13. etc.   Posted: 05/11/2023 22:33:18

Since you asked...I love the GR III! It's not for everyone though. It's great for travel, street photography and events. It's better than using an iPhone because it starts up faster, it's easier to use for one-handed operation, and has a larger APSC sensor. It's also quite stealth for street photography because of its small form factor. It looks like a cheap, point-and-shoot film camera, but is a fantastic little digital marvel.   Posted: 05/12/2023 07:26:19

I don't have a GR3 but I do have a Fuji X100V which seems to be in the same category with a similar fixed lens. The Fuji is a wonderful little camera and its image clarity is outstanding. In UK currency it is more expensive than the GR3 (all our prices seem to be more than USA generally) but the Fuji is also very portable, very strongly built and produces great images.   Posted: 05/13/2023 04:52:17

I've had the Fuji X100V for over 3 years, but rarely used it. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. But, I fell in love with the Ricoh GR III (and IIIx) right away. It's kinda ugly, but has amazing personality. :-)   Posted: 05/13/2023 07:28:21

I like a bit of mystery and there is mystery in this shot (what is he doing? Taking a photo perhaps?) together with attractive lines in the background and being well positioned in the frame. I think your post processing is excellent and this is a very enjoyable image.   Posted: 05/13/2023 04:40:52

I'm not sure, but by looking at the image, it appears he was taking a cell-phone shot of the courtyard. Maybe he liked the diagonal lines, too!   Posted: 05/13/2023 07:19:28

Well done with effective post-processing. I am unable to offer suggestions for improvement. A photo op presented itself and you grabbed it.   Posted: 05/25/2023 19:08:57

I like silhouettes and the contrasted lines and patterns. The man is looked out the window and seems to be contemplated.   Posted: 05/30/2023 06:18:38
