About the Image(s)

Mt Hood in a Fiery Golden Hour

I recently took a field class to learn how to shoot the Milky Way. We arrived in a location where Mount Hood was going to be our foreground. We set up along a fence outside of a very large cattle pasture and Mount Hood was straight in the distance. There were rolling hills directly in front of the mountain. We arrived in daylight to set up and get our focus dialed in before nightfall. While waiting for it to get dark, I took several shots of Mount Hood. As golden hour progressed I started to see red on the rocky rims of the mountain in my LCD screen. It was amazing! Edited in Lightroom.
1/50, f8, iso 100. 105mm (RF24-105mm f4-7.1). Canon R6 with tripod.

I think this is a well composed shot - including Mt Hood on the left balanced by the tree and bright point in the sky create a strong, interesting image. The exposure gives the time of day. For my eye, the red reflections on Mt Hood seem a bit overdone so I would consider playing those down a bit. Wonderful image though   Posted: 09/12/2023 16:33:46

Thank you for your feedback. I love color so sometimes get carried away. I will continue to work on holding myself back. :)   Posted: 09/22/2023 11:52:51

Nicely presented image. The exposure and lighting is good. I like the placement of the tree in the lower right corner along with the colorful textured sky as it adds balance to the sharp peak of Mount Hood. For me, the curved tree line in the foreground adds interest and depth. I also like the reflective light on the mountain snow as it assists with the balance of the image but for me its a bit intense. Also, I do notice a slight halo along the edge of the mountain. Great image overall.   Posted: 09/17/2023 10:15:57

Thank you. I didn't catch the halo, ooops. I'll take a look that.   Posted: 09/22/2023 11:54:48

This image is almost like a painting. It has a good distinction between foreground, middle and background which makes it pleasing to watch. I agree with Michael in toning down the red slightly. A beautiful picture!   Posted: 09/20/2023 02:36:22

OK, I KNOW Mount Hood is a volcano! Everybody is a comic! :-)

You do have the perfect sky for this shot. The semi rim lighting makes the mountain glow while the snow adds interest. The exceptional sky keeps the entire scene in a limited color pallet and adds simplicity to the entire scene. You have not tried to bring in too much and thus the mountain is the uncontested star of the show. There is balance between the mountain (actually it is a volcano) and the tree and bright area of the sky. You might tone down those reds on the mountain just a bit.   Posted: 09/23/2023 10:18:53

Ha ha! Thank you for your feedback. I have to remind myself to dial back the color! I love color, pops of color and drama. I think that's why I'm drawn to fine art photography.   Posted: 09/23/2023 12:52:05
