Tied Up Barge by Tom McCreary, APSA, MPSA

May 2023 - Tied Up Barge

About the Image(s)

This was taken here in Cape Girardeau, MO in March. This is a large Corp of Engineers boat that was making it's semi-annual trip up the Mississippi River to check on river conditions. I liked the lead-in with the ropes. I took it with my Olympus E-M5 Mark III and Olympus 12-45mm lens at 19mm, 1/80th second, f11 and ISO 400. I used F11 to get everything in focus.

Love the texture of the rope, and the pathway leading us to the vessel with the anchor solidly in focus. The light is soft and complementary and bringing out the colours on the vessel and in the sky. Very nice image Tom.   Posted: 05/17/2023 11:37:58

I like the strong anchor point of your photo in the lower left corner. From there, lines, triangles, colors and tones appear and blend very well. Like the setting.   Posted: 05/18/2023 08:44:37

Good points: sharp from front to back; the ropes form good leading lines; the triangles formed by the ropes; the foreground, including the texture of the ropes. The foreground itself, with the anchor point and ropes could have been the subject of a photo.   Posted: 05/19/2023 23:17:58

Well composed Tom. The anchor captures the viewer's attention right away, the ropes take one into the image, in this case a barge. In case one's eyes wander to the right the ramp will bring them right back into the image. The colors associated with the barge are complimentary. An idea to try sometime would be to increase the contrast in the sky to draw secondary attention.   Posted: 05/21/2023 16:57:18
