Who’s looking after baby? by Peter Elliston

November 2023 - Who’s looking after baby?

About the Image(s)

Details: I took this at a local fairground a month or two back. Whilst I have given it this title, I need to make clear that this mother was actually very good at minding the fairground ride and looking after her baby as well as taking phone messages. But The picture could suggest otherwise and I was convinced she had Batman as her backup! It works Ok in colour but the mono conversion takes away a lot of fairground distractions. Taken on a fuji xt3 1/125 @ f13 ISO 1250 and you may wonder why and the reason is I had forgotten to change it!

Peter-- All kinds of interesting elements here. Monochrome certainly seems like the right choice. The woman really interests me. Her expression seems stressed; she's working, has her hands full - literally, there's her toddler looking for attention as well. And Batman looking on. Great story-telling. The curved lines on the fancy pram add some nice interest.   Posted: 11/03/2023 20:15:42

Hi Peter,
Your candid street shots are always interesting. This image shows a hectic day for a mother with her baby. The story elicits emotion. Tack sharp details. Good tonal variations in the scene. Well done.   Posted: 11/05/2023 17:42:35

Nice tonal variations in the image, from full black to full white. The conversion to monochrome does take away from the distractions. However it seems to me that the image is too busy. I think I would like to see a wide open aperture so that some of the distracting parts of the image were blurred.   Posted: 11/15/2023 21:26:13

Peter, This would make a good photojournalist image. There is a very interesting story here. I love the way the baby is looking up at its Mother. I too think there is too much going on and lot of distractions.   Posted: 11/18/2023 20:08:01

I only wish that had been a beer can and not coke.
Nice shot as always
My debate is batman. On the one hand I like the resonance between his posture and the child's - on the other I think the narrative might be stronger if he were cut leaving only the two main characters.
Another title? "Have a sit down, mum" - might be a little kinder.   Posted: 11/19/2023 16:36:18
