August 2026 - Fishermen at Point Lookout

I drove to Point Lookout partly to honor my lighthouse keeper ancestors, and partly in search of a great shot. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was closed. But turning toward the water, I discovered something interesting. The afternoon backlight created perfect conditions for silhouettes and contrasting glittering waves across the Potomac River. When five fishermen drifted into frame aboard their small boat, I quickly picked up my camera and CLICK! I exposed for the highlights, making every figure as a black form against the luminous, glittering water. Converting to monochrome in post-processing, I pushed up the tonal contrasts even further to give it a timeless and graphic quality."

Beautiful afternoon capture of the busy fishermen-it really evokes the feeling of being by the ocean and makes me miss the sea.
I think the foreground rocks have the potential to contribute much more to the composition if their texture and structure were more visible. It might be worth selectively brightening them to reveal some of that detail.
I would also be curious to see how the photograph looks flipped horizontally. Reversing the composition could change the visual flow and might create an even stronger connection between the foreground rocks and the fishermen. Posted: 08/01/2026 17:25:44

Love the smooth black silhouettes of the fishermen against the bright texture of the water. I might crop the image and delete the foreground rocks. The image is strong enough without the rocks. Just my thoughts. Nicely done, Maude. Posted: 08/08/2026 23:43:10
The silhouetted fishermen and boat stand out beautifully in contrast against the sea. There is enough detail in the rocks holding the foreground to make them interesting without taking too much attention from the main subject. I presume these are hobby fishermen since there are five in the boat. It has a relaxed feel about it, the sea having movement but not enough to endanger the standing men. I am glad to see it from the photographer's position on shore - water for me is to photographed and walked beside, not gone in or on. Posted: 08/17/2026 08:41:29
Maude -- I'm with Barbara regarding the rocks; I don't think they contribute anything to the narrative and are distracting. Just my opinion. The silhouettes of the boat and fishermen and the texture of the water are wonderful. The arrangement of the figures and the details of each individual such as the hats and the fishing rods are very interesting to me. Posted: 08/22/2026 16:15:13
