About the Image(s)
I shot this image while Kayaking on a local lake on a foggy morning. It was New Years day and a lovely paddle. I used my Nikon Z6 111 with a 20-70 f 4 lens for this image. My intent was to capture the foggy erring scene of the Louisiana swamp. My settings are: ISO 320, 24mm, f/4.0, and 1/800sec shutter speed. I added the owl which is a png that I created from one of my images.

I can see why you added the owl, but I think they picture would stand without it. The three shapes and the asymmetric composition, added to the mystery of the mist, make a strong photograph. Your pictures of the swamp make me feel there is something lurking, just out of sight, ready to . . . I'm not sure what.   Posted: 04/06/2026 09:17:43
Julie, I like the drama of this image and think the owl is a really god addition. But I am not sure that he is in quite the right place or in the best direction. If you flipped the owl so that he was flying left to right and moved him slightly to the right so his wings did not overlap the tree on the left then it give a link to the far right 'trees' as if the owl was flying towards them and this would leave them less isolated in the frame. Just a thought.   Posted: 04/08/2026 10:00:38
You succeeded in capturing the eerie, desolate atmosphere on the swamp. The reflections in the water add interest. I would like to see more detail in the trees. Perhaps I would lighten the shadows a bit. Nice job, Julie.   Posted: 04/08/2026 22:35:34
Julie--I am enjoying your swamp pictures. The three trees each have their own personality, and the reflections give additional interest. Your placement of the owl in the composition is just right. The fact that there is no horizon because of the fog creates a mysterious feeling. I like this image a lot.   Posted: 04/09/2026 16:58:16
You have a great sense for beautiful compositions. I think the three cypress trees give balance and rhythm, while the bird adds movement and life, and the reflections symmetry and depth. Very nicely done. I guess that when you were kayaking in the foggy weather, colors were muted and/or washed-out, so converting it to Black and White was a natural choice. I think you could try what Peter is suggesting regarding the placement of the bird.   Posted: 04/13/2026 18:51:05
