This lonely tree stopped me in my tracks when I was driving on the Swedish countryside. In the middle of a snow-covered field, it stood out strong, stripped of its leaves, and surrounded by nothing but silence, isolation and cold. I pulled over and reached for my camera. I had just come from Washington DC, where busy streets and politics fill every corner of one’s mind. Here there was nothing of that. Just stillness. This lonely tree spoke of isolation, of persisting in emptiness, of standing strong when everything around it had faded away. I exposed to the right, to let the emptiness fill the frame and the tree to do the talking.

A minimilist photograph worthy of Michael McKenna. I like the way you have left a few strands of grass showing against the snow. I see the emptiness and the isolation but not the loneliness. The tree has the grass and its own strength. Being on its own does not automatically lead to loneliness. A good metaphor and contrast for the bustle of Washington (or any city) - where many are surrounded by people but are still alone.   Posted: 04/06/2026 09:03:17

Made, this is a lovely image. Dark but beautiful at the same time and very well composed. i agree with Robin about retaining the hint of the other shapes and grasses. Would make an excellent print.   Posted: 04/08/2026 09:48:31

Simply lovely, Maude. Nicely composed high key and minimalist image of the lone tree. It keeps my interest. The tree against the faded background worked well. I agree with Robin it is Michael Kenna's style and very well done.   Posted: 04/08/2026 23:00:21

Maude--Perhaps I'm wrong, but it looks to me like it is actively snowing which adds another element to the story. The tree is wonderfully gnarley and looks strong and resilient in the extreme conditions. It speaks to me of fortitude and independance in a harsh world. It makes an eloquent minimalist composition.   Posted: 04/09/2026 16:26:36
