Fourth of July Bed Race by Kathleen McCrary

July 2025 - Fourth of July Bed Race

About the Image(s)

A few years ago we were in eastern Washington State for Fourth of July, where it's hot and the small towns celebrate the old-fashioned way. The town of Soap Lake has a couple thousand residents and this is how they have a good time. Soap Lake itself is a meromictic lake, one of only eleven in the US (there will be a quiz), meaning it consists of two
separate layers of strongly mineralized water. The lake's two layers have not mixed in thousands of years, making it the most "radical" (that's what the scientists call it) of the meromictic lakes in the US. For years the town promoted itself as a health spa and people came to drink the water,
which does not taste good. It was a lot of fun.

This confirms my view that everyone on the West Coast it nuts! Seriously though, this is just the sort of scene you might find in an English rural village on a fete day. I like the way you have caught the action in true 'street' fashion and love the triangle of the figures . Also the dynamic angle of the turn they are making. It does seem that no one is particularly interested in what's going on. One man on the left is out for a jog and the man, behind right, has turned his back and another is walking away. See, your photograph has drawn me in.   Posted: 07/11/2025 13:28:38

An interesting and funny street image which captures both the enjoyment and enthusiasm of the participants. This has to be a San Francico street scene.   Posted: 07/14/2025 00:17:54

Great catch, Kathleen. You captured a fun and exciting moment at Soap Lake nicely. It kept my interest. I explored the image looking for the other participants in the race. Thanks for sharing the interesting facts about the meromictic lake. I enjoyed the image very much.   Posted: 07/14/2025 21:06:30

Kathleen, great fun street image. Plenty of action in this image which shows people enjoying doing something ridiculous - and why not? You are bound to have people in the 'wrong' place in a shot like this so saying that the man in the street behind the bed is a distraction is pretty pointless - but if you removed him then that might be something to consider. Or maybe that would just be a tidy up too far.   Posted: 07/17/2025 08:53:21

Thanks, Peter. This was a little bit of an Independance Day joke.   Posted: 07/24/2025 15:07:33
