LEAVING THE UNDERWORLD by Maude Svensson

March 2025 - LEAVING THE UNDERWORLD

About the Image(s)

I am captivated by juxtapositions, and in this photograph, I have made my best to capture a few. The photo is from one of Stockholm’s (capital of Sweden) subway stations that reminds me about the mystical and scary underworld I fantasized and dreamed about as a child. I sometimes thought of how we, as lonely people, are extremely small and isolated despite living in large cities with huge and massive transport systems, some of which are built deep underground.

In my photo, the raw rock walls of ancient stone far below the surface seem scary and surreal, but an impressive system of escalators is taking an everyday person carrying shopping bags up to our “normal” world. I have been trying to use light and shadows to make the picture more dramatic and give it a surreal feeling. I have dodged the escalator areas to create focus and leading lines. I burned the ceiling area to create a moody atmosphere as well as contrast. Moreover, I used dodge and burn to enhance a mystic and smoke-like texture of the rough rock walls, and to direct the eye of the viewer to the lone person on its way up. I sharpened it and used a radial mask of light around it.

Very nicely done contrast between the rough stone and the artificial constructs. Until I read your commentary, I thought is was a composite image. I am used to the Metro here in Washington, DC, which has no such contrast. Your image reminds me of the photographs of Jerry Uelsmann, which WERE composits. Here is a sample.   Posted: 03/03/2025 23:11:34

I was very happy to read your comment Stephen, mainly for two reasons:
1) Jerry Uelsmann is my absolute favorite photographer - I love his art, his creativity, courage and his fantastic technological skills (there was no Photoshop when he did his images). The mere thought that you were thinking of him when you saw my photograph, is just unbelievable to me. Thank you very much.
2) I am also used to the Washington DC Metro - since I also live here.
If you travel to Stockholm, you will see the most amazing art in its Metro System. You will love it.   Posted: 03/04/2025 09:56:15

Your treatment of the rock walls creates a sense of drama for the figure contemplating taking the escalator to an unknown location?? The person carrying shopping bags adds a sense of the mundane in contrast to the impending doom of the walls waiting to swallow the person.   Posted: 03/10/2025 11:45:16

Your photo very much reminds me of a song written by Kris Kristofferson, Casey's Last Ride -I think: About a person riding the underground into oblivion.

It's a wonderful picture that easily seems to blend the rocks and escalators into an underworld fantasy, or perhaps nightmare, where all the escalators are going down. Creates a very nice illusion. Added to that is the frozen shopper who suddenly realizes that there is no way out of that hell.

Super job!   Posted: 03/10/2025 16:49:46

Incredible shot, Maude. It's mystical. The lighting adds drama. Your perspective and post processing leads me into the Twilight Zone. The image has strong impact. Very well done.   Posted: 03/10/2025 18:46:22

Maude, welcome to the group and for this fantastic image. I too almost thought this was a composite so well have you blended everything. Great composition, the figure is well-placed and the detail you have brought out in the underground ceiling is really impressive.   Posted: 03/12/2025 09:17:03

Excellent composite. You have blended the escalators and the walls very beautifully. There is also a good story since usually one descends into the underworld. Why is this character allowed out? What's in his shopping bag? This picture is a feast for the eye and the imagination. (I too like the work of Jerry Ueslmann.)   Posted: 03/20/2025 18:30:46

Maude--So, I guess the guy has finished his underworld shopping and is headed back to the surface. This is obviously a well-conceived and well-executed image which suggests all sorts of narratives. The contrast between the organic form of the rock walls and the very industrial-looking escalator is fascinating. The figure with his shopping bags creates the story. Congratulations on a wonderful image, Maude! I look forward to seeing more of your work.   Posted: 03/28/2025 16:02:54
