Talking to the Drivers by Robin Mellor

November 2024 - Talking to the Drivers

About the Image(s)

I thought I would offer a human interest story this month.

This is one of the locomotives on the Lynton and Barnstaple narrow gauge railway in North Devon (https://www.lynton-rail.co.uk). It runs back and forth on a two mile stretch of line. The drivers always have time to talk and answer questions.

A truly delightful composition - I enjoy the lens distortion especially as the height and overlook of the two men probably corresponds to the point of view of the little girl. The reflection on the side of the cab works well for me, bringing the attention into the left side.
The crop at the top close to the corner of the cab distracted me, and I might suggest taking a sliver off the top to make it less so - also making the driver seem even taller.   Posted: 11/03/2024 00:53:57

Nice shot, Robin. There are many interesting elements in this image. The little girl is the star. Love all the reflections on the locomotive. You captured sharp details throughout. Well exposed. Good range of tonal values. I agree with Gerard about cropping the top a bit. It would make it look deliberate.   Posted: 11/10/2024 21:32:59

Robin, this is an interesting shot. I like the contrast between the rough and ready drivers and the delicacy of the small girl. The reflections of the other people on the side of the engine drew my eye and I wonder if it would help if they could go - otherwise a lovely shot.   Posted: 11/12/2024 16:30:36

Robin--The figure of the child is somewhat ambiguous since we don't see her face or any limbs apart from one foot. The two men and the train are good. I particularly like the reflective surfaces.   Posted: 11/16/2024 19:36:18

You have captured a lovely story here. I just wish we could see a little bit of the little girl's face. I am a bit concerned about the merger at the top of the image.   Posted: 11/17/2024 23:19:17
