About the Image(s)

I was traveling in Ohio and found this Robin nest filled with some fast growing babies. There are a number of things I wish had come together better, and I am sure you will all find them and point our a few more I missed ;) Still, the picture makes me smile and shows some action and behavior which is more than all of the “perfect” shots I took that day of warblers on sticks.

I do enjoy this photo more than than "bird on sticks" photos. My take was to darken all but the action, maybe bringing attention to the feeding while still showing the context of the other chicks.   Posted: 07/05/2026 16:11:37

Story is king in wildlife photography, and this is a highly compelling storytelling image with exceptional timing and multiple points of interest.

The bright, gaping mouth and feeding action immediately grab the viewer and then lead the eye through the expressions of the remaining chicks. I do wish the adult was sharper, but nonetheless this is a visually interesting and memorable wildlife photograph with excellent competition potential.

I don't follow PSA rules, so I use vignettes when I feel necessary, but I would not in this case because the bright yellow gape is the visual anchor of the image. My eye goes immediately to the feeding interaction and then wanders to the other chicks' expressions.

The composition naturally pulls attention to the open mouth because it's the brightest & most saturated color in the frame, it's positioned near a strong compositional intersection and unbelievably the worm creates a visual line directly into the chick's mouth.

High impact and clear story, multiple supporting characters and well-executed - could not ask for much more. This image induced me to hang around and examine it for while - terrific job Jeremy!
