American Avocet, April 2026. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, OR, USA

I encountered this American Avocet feeding in late afternoon light at Malheur NWR. Although there was a strong breeze at the time (10-15 mph), the levee I was on creating a lee effect with Stilts and Avocets crowding the calmer water adjacent to the levee. A useful lesson in otherwise mediocre wind conditions. Of the Avocet images I got that afternoon, I was attracted to the prancing dandiness of this moment.

Great photograph. Great texture and color and the water ripples add to the action of the shot.I might have removed the sticks in the upper left and the foot reflection on the bottom was a distraction for me. And I now alway turn my subjects to face the right as had been mentioned in this forum before. Not sure that it always helps my photos, but I have never felt that it hurt them.   Posted: 07/03/2026 19:50:31

No question what your subject is and nice touch in leaving some grasses in the upper left of the image - Tack sharp, great prancing action and detail throughout - kudos, a winning image no question. Meanwhile, there's an old expression in photography; The best background is frequently the one you hardly notice at all. And I am very aware of the deep blue background as presented. Color has visual weight and the deep blues pull attention from an outstanding composition and action. See my VF - I reduced the Blue saturation by minus 78 and purple to minus 1 and increased the Blue Luminance plus 74 and Aqua plus 2. - dynamite image Charles, dynamite.   Posted: 07/03/2026 21:52:12

The bird is sharp, the movement is good. If possible, you could try a lower perspective. The blue of the background is really dark. If I were you, I would lighten it. Personally, the greyness of Butch's version does not feel right for me. The brown and the blue are complementary colors, they look good together and in the paleness their harmony is not noticeable.   Posted: 07/08/2026 14:37:33

Excellent job with image. I love the texture of the bird and the contrast with it to the background. A lower perspective is always nice, but its still a very strong image.   Posted: 07/10/2026 12:54:16
