The Eye of the Flamingo by Roy Lockwood

December 2025 - The Eye of the Flamingo

About the Image(s)

Nikon Z8 105 mm ISO 640 f/8.0 1/1600 sec
This is a Chilean flamingo and was photographed at our local “Sunken Gardens “ here in Florida. It is a sinkhole that was turned into a garden in 1903 and then a local attraction in 1935. 17 Chilean flamingos were put on exhibit in 1956 and the flock has been maintained since.

Pretty flamingo - could be the cover of the song!

Well placed the sharp eye and the big beak! First, I had to get used to the red color. But the longer I looked at the picture it is getting normal. That's how a Chilean flamingo is dressed!   Posted: 12/06/2025 08:17:21

Roy - This is an artistically daring composition and I love it - to me, this is what photography is all about. That said, the image may be a bit overprocessed, which moves it away from authenticity and into digital-art territory, which is fine, so long as that was your intent.
I love that this is not a natural history shot and for lack of a better term I'd call it an abstract portrait. To my eye, the image is all about graphic design and color-field interaction and I would consider retitling to "You Talkin' to Me? This is a KILLER image!

Roy first I was surprised by the beak of the flamingo, that is turned towards the observer. On the second take however I was impressed by the sharpness of every detail and the fantastic colors of the bird. To me this is a very artistic photo!   Posted: 12/07/2025 09:40:14

Thank you all for the kind comments. I am really working on getting away from "bird portraits". I try to avoid caged animals and intended on doing some macro photography with friends in this garden. The light was shadowy with lots of bright sun patches and the birds were all scrambling over food. After lots of study, I isolated this image (the bird's body in the background does not belong to the head!)   Posted: 12/07/2025 22:21:37

Roy - whew! So glad you told us the body and the head were not the same animal - what a creative idea, as I said, killer image   Posted: 12/08/2025 14:32:06

This is an absolutely fantastic image. I do think the head is a bit over-processed.   Posted: 12/17/2025 00:39:24
