During a visit to Acadia National Park in Maine last summer, I learned of two lakes with nesting Loons. Daily visits for a week paid off!

I have heard about chicks riding on the backs of swans and mergansers, but have never seen it. Congratulations on a beautiful close-up. There must have been a lot of light when you took this shot. Loons I have seen come out much darker, but I like the green highlights. I might darken the background a smidge, but that is just personal preference.   Posted: 07/05/2025 15:47:20
Terrific shot Roy - I've never seen this either and glad you had a chance to capture it. Clear COI, well done technically, and a good nature story.   Posted: 07/09/2025 23:36:28
I am envious. Loons in their breeding feathers are on my bucket list. We get loons here, but in winter when they are dark gray. This is a great capture and story is well told.   Posted: 07/13/2025 00:55:33
The patterns of the Loon are dazzling, plus the brilliant red eye and topped with a baby on board. What could be better!:)   Posted: 07/13/2025 21:36:36
