Doing the Two-Step by Kathleen Sewell

July 2025 - Doing the Two-Step

About the Image(s)

I happened upon these Black-Necked Stilts at a nearby wetland. I so enjoyed watching them and particularly liked capturing the image of the pair stepping in synch!

Focal length ~ 400mm
Shutter speed ~ 1/1250
Aperture ~ f/16
ISO ~ 640

I raised the exposure, lowered highlights, added a little vibrance and texture.

Smart choice of aperture. I automatically choose the widest aperture I can for wildlife, and that wouldn't have gotten both of these synchronized stilts in focus. Wonderful timing of the shot. Beautiful.   Posted: 07/05/2025 15:52:28

Kathleen, very nice photograph of the Stilts and a good job with the DOF. Being fortunate in
having a lot of opportunities to photograph these birds in a nearby wetland, I have found that if you can get into a position with the birds eyes exactly perpendicular to the sun, you get their bright red eyes.   Posted: 07/08/2025 14:04:59

Synchronized movements in wildlife images are special and the strength of this image. Would have liked to have seen a bit better definition in birds' eyes and the full right foot of the Stilt on the right. Nonetheless, it's the positives that carry this image - nice job.   Posted: 07/09/2025 23:39:57

These are some of my favorite birds and I am so happy when I see them. Great synchronization. I agree that the eyes would be better with definition or catch light, but still a good catch. I liked the tip from Roy.   Posted: 07/13/2025 00:59:12
