Hawfinch's Bath by Peter Hornbostel, MPSA

May 2025 - Hawfinch's Bath

About the Image(s)

Again we have been in the Netherlands to visit a hut in the wood. Best prepared to hide a shoot photos without being seen nor heard. This time I was well prepared with my Canon 400mm 2.8 on tripod and the zoom Canon 200-400mm 6.2-9.0. For this event I've rent a Canon R6 Mark II and with my own R5 I could change the bodies like I want. What we got was brillant! Over 4.000 shots. I well remembered my comment on the starling bath last month - this photo shall show, what I meant: action with the bird. Please give your serious comments for the bathing situation. The reason is, that I have a lot of these actions with different birds and I'm not sure, what will show more story into the picture!

This photo was made with Canon R5, 400mm, 1/1600sec, 3200 ISO and aperture 8.0.

Peter, I personally love this action image. The almost ground level vantage point, super sharp eye and the splash makes it. Perfect crop and nice non distracting background. Was this one of those human constructed photo bird pond binds you were shooting from?   Posted: 05/04/2025 16:53:15

Yes, Tom. There are several ponds in Netherland. Amazing is, that they are inmidst pure nature - in the middle of the forest.   Posted: 05/04/2025 17:09:43

Great photo and I concur with all of Tom's comments. It is really great to have photographers in many countries, get to see birds outside of our area.   Posted: 05/05/2025 18:02:19

Excellent shot Peter (as usual) I think the strength of the image is how you've immediately drawn attention to the subject's eye and head AND that you managed to have a bit of "unfrozen" water behind the subject's head - NICE! Not to shabby of a perspective either ;-)   Posted: 05/07/2025 00:52:41

Peter ~ Your Hawfinch is brimming with personality ~ isn't that what we strive for with our photos!! Plus, you have mastered the capture of splashes! :)   Posted: 05/07/2025 19:43:25

Phenomenal action photo Peter! I like that water drops are a little bit moving with 1/1600 sec. Perhaps I would have put the bird a bit closer to the right side.   Posted: 05/11/2025 08:44:19
