Sandhill Crane fly-away by Butch Mazzuca

April 2025 - Sandhill Crane fly-away

About the Image(s)

The Bernardo Wildlife Management Area in New Mexico, is a smaller area compared to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, located about 20 miles away, but during the past few migration seasons Bernardo has had far more cranes than Bosque del Apache. I’ve been told by a ranger that it has something to do with the food sources in the area and problems with the soil, but for whatever reason the thousands of Sandhills that used to stop at Bosque are now are Bernardo ??“ this shot taken during a fly-away, which occur randomly throughout the day especially when some clown decided to drive his four-wheel vehicle around the “Do not enter” sign ?

Your image at The Berardo Wildlife Management Area shows the Sandhill Cranes are still flourishing on a grand scale! On my screen it looks like it could be a bit sharper? Your image beautifully showcases the Sandhill Cranes in their natural environment. I can almost hear the liftoff! :)   Posted: 04/15/2025 19:51:51

Impressive photo of Sandhill Cranes. Haveing a Crane in the forground would have added context to the photo (hard to tell the species of bird from so far away. And I know all to well, "wildlife" means you get what you can!)   Posted: 04/20/2025 18:24:55
