Golden Slippers by Kathleen Sewell

March 2025 - Golden Slippers

About the Image(s)

I spied this Great Egret enjoying a misty morning, which added a soft elegance to the scene.

Focal length ~ 400mm
Shutter Speed ~ 1/1600
Aperture ~ f/5.6
IS0 ~ 2000

Cropped image, increased exposure, added a little contrast and texture, lowered dehaze a bit. Added noise reduction in Lightroom.

Exellent photograph! The colors are wonderful. The soft land in the background works well. Would have included the whole wing if it made it into your frame.   Posted: 03/05/2025 11:40:18

I would have included the whole wing, but it somehow escaped my frame! :)   Posted: 03/10/2025 16:11:42

A lovely image that exudes softness Kathleen. That said, clipped wings seldom add to an image. See my VF - I filled in the cropped out wing tips in AI Generative fill   Posted: 03/06/2025 08:56:09

Your AI generated wings are super! I use Lightroom CC, and although it has some AI features, I don't think it has AI Generative fill. Did you use Photoshop for this?   Posted: 03/10/2025 16:15:30

Yes, PS - actually, the only time I use AI is when I'm reviewing images - Still a nice shot...

A well captured moment Kathleen! I like using zoom teleobjectives for flying birds, in order to catch the entire bird. In the original raw or jpg file were the tips of the wings present? I mean this is a little egret as its fingers are yellow. The beak is black. The great egrets have similar colors in the breeding period, but their lores are green.   Posted: 03/16/2025 05:53:34

If birds suddenly spread their wings, the photographer may be suprised - larger and even larger, no place on the frame! I think, everybody knows this situation. I try to avoid this with a smaller focal length. Cropping the pohto afterwards is always a good solution.
But anyway, the egret is very expressive; in action. This makes the picture interesting for the viewer. Very good background and sharpness!   Posted: 03/26/2025 11:47:11

I think this is a snowy egret - they have the golden slippers and are smaller than a great egret. I love the artistic quality of this photo. I agree that if you are allowed to use AI, the added wings help to make the image. Beautiful.   Posted: 03/27/2025 15:21:07

Thank you Julia. And you are correct about it being a snowy egret. :)   Posted: 03/27/2025 17:51:42
