Blowfish - Blue Heron by Roy Lockwood

January 2025 - Blowfish - Blue Heron

About the Image(s)

Nikon Z8, ISO 320, 800mm, f/6.3 1/2500 sec

I was walking the beach when a fisherman threw back a blowfish. A Great Blue Heron lurking nearby quickly skewered the fish and flew off to a nearby sandbar. Despite several attempts, it was not able to swallow it.

Roy, I love this shot. Here's a suggestion if you're going to submit into competition, to me the story is the blowfish vis-a-vis the fact that the heron is facing away from the camera, so if it were mine, I'd consider titling the image "Skewered!" - in my VF, I re-cropped, lightened the blowfish, darkened the heron's head a neck a touch, highlighted the blowfish's eye a touch and added a very slight vignette centered on the blowfish's eye   Posted: 01/07/2025 15:58:44

Butch, I did not give much thought to the title, but the fish was definitely skewered! I had made all the adjustments you suggested, but not quite as much. I should have gone a little further as you suggested. I do try to keep my adjustment subtle so as not to be noticed by the viewer.   Posted: 01/08/2025 21:20:16

A great moment Roy, I like the tongue of the heron too. With the story, this frame is good to the Photojournalism category   Posted: 01/07/2025 17:10:45

It's a bit like some human beings: Can't get enough! Seems to be a natural problem, ha! Incredible shot Roy! To darken the photo like Butch suggested would be the only hint I can give. Congrats to a perfect shot to th e right time!

Excellent image Roy. Normally having the Great Blue facing away would be a negative but in this case the fish is the primary subject and a good one at that. This image has great visual impact and interest. Nice non distracting background also. I really like it!   Posted: 01/10/2025 16:05:33

I was happy the Blue Heron got a good meal, but seeing the droplets of blood made me feel for the colorful Blowfish. Ah, that is nature, and your image tells the story so well!!
