December 2024 - Lunch

About the Image(s)

Canon 5DII Canon 100-400 @ 248mm (397mm equivalent) ISO 250 - f5.6 - 1/2500th second

Shot of this Osprey near Ft. Meyers Florida after it had captured this needlefish - it was lunchtime, hence the title. I’ve always felt that shutter speed (Tv) was the most important setting when shooting wildlife and I keep my camera set at 1/2500th second when shooting birds and a 1/1000th second when shooting mammals - it may be overkill but to me if the eyes aren’t tack sharp you don’t have a photograph. I had captured six or seven shots of the subject in flight and didn’t bother to changer my setting when it landed to enjoy its meal.

I like feeding Ospreys. I did darken the branch some. On my screen, the resolution seems low. I also like 1/2500 shutter speed but do ok down to 1/1250 on cloudy days.   Posted: 12/05/2024 13:27:04

Butch, really a big shot! Great cinema. I like Roys suggestion too. This take away some light!

It looks like it belongs in National Geographic!
The image appears a little soft on my screen, but it's an excellent capture of 'lunchtime'. That is one long fish! :)   Posted: 12/12/2024 01:01:02

Thank you Kathleen - I agree, many images appear soft when using the PSA rez limit - don't know why they limit us, but I suppose there's a reason. Anyway, thanks again for your kind words.   Posted: 12/12/2024 03:39:19
