Solitude Of Sunset by Howard Davenport

July 2024 - Solitude Of Sunset

About the Image(s)

I shot this early evening in February. The lake was really serene and fog had started rolling in from the distance. My settings were iso 1000 at f/8 with 147 mm at 1/80 sec.
I had to denoise the image and adjust the highlights and blacks.

Hello Howard,
Wonderful light!
The distant fog makes it hard to see if the horizon is level.

Hi Howard. From your description it sounds like a very special moment, and your image shows it was accompanied by great light. The birds, seemingly so peacefully enjoying the moment, help convey the serenity. The color contrast in the water, between the blue foreground and warm sunset reflections, is the favorite part of the image for me.

It would be interesting to understand in more detail how you processed the image. While the colors are amazing there does seem to be a color shift in the sky (greenish tones) to something which does not seem completely natural. Also, the detail in the shadows has really been lost, and there also the color doesn't seem completely correct. Could you post the original image without edits? That might allow us to understand better what processing you've done and where the color casts might have arisen.

Hi Howard,
Nice colors!
You captured at the right timing! Well done.
I prefer to see a bit more space below the first bird in the foreground.   Posted: 07/16/2024 00:32:22

Hi Howard. Capturing images during golden and blue hours is the best time to get lovely ambient light. You got good golden color in the sky and the reflection in the lake. Having swans on the lake adds to the image. As pointed out by Rick there is a horizontal tilt that can be easily corrected in PS. Also the details in dark areas have been lost. I can see some PS work in the shadow areas where trees are. You seem to have used dodge tool to bring some highlights but it is clearly evident. You may be able to better light during summer months.   Posted: 07/17/2024 06:35:25

Hi Howard, this image has great light and has potential. I really like the reflections of the sky on the water. I agree with Robert that the color adjustments seem a bit unnatural and the trees in the background are too dark and have no shape. I also feel the image is not level.   Posted: 07/18/2024 21:17:51
