Iceland #2 by Robert Atkins

October 2026 - Iceland #2

About the Image(s)

This image is a second from my family trip to Iceland a couple of months ago. It was made in the popular highland location of Landmannalaugar. The road into the area was no fun at all. But once there it was hard to make a bad image. It has everything - fascinating multi-colored rock, interesting gesture in the shapes of the peaks, and at least while I was there wonderful light, including morning fog (though this particular image was later in the day).

I was drawn to this image by all of those elements, although I think the form of the large peak - the leading lines in the foreground bringing you to the ridge - and the layering with the brighter range of peaks behind is what attracted me. I think the composition is strong, although I am considering cropping down a bit from the top and I am not sure the sky is adding a lot other than some negative space. Thoughts?

Hi Robert. For me, the best aspect of your scene is the varying light levels . . . especially the coloration variations in the bright areas. I don't think you need to do any cropping. Lovely Image.   Posted: 10/08/2026 04:04:06

Amazing landscape and such a strong composition, Robert. Lots of impact and so much to explore. I like the crop because it doesn't crowd the peak and I like the sky because it doesn't compete. It's so nicely balanced with the heavy weight of the mountain in the foreground balanced by the light on the ridges in the distance. I love to linger on the rich colors catching the light in the lower right.
Your sky looks good for a polarizer. Hard not to get overly dark areas. Being at 70mm helps.   Posted: 10/09/2026 21:34:04
