Autumn Lake Reflection by Bill Crnkovich

July 2026 - Autumn Lake Reflection

About the Image(s)

I took this on a backroad near Marble, Colorado. It is a stitch of 2 horizontal images. I love the reflection in the still water. The fall colors add a nice contrast to the gray rocks. To me, I am looking for a hidden message: a sort of nature hieroglyphics. :-)

Hello Bill,
Lovely scene! Fantastic reflection! Part of me is tempted to crop out the right 20% of the image including the vertical tree trunk as it, for me, disrupts the flow of the rock outcroppings.   Posted: 07/03/2026 14:32:20

Thanks for the comment, Rick. I wasn't sure about that myself. I'll upload a cropped version.   Posted: 07/05/2026 20:00:50

That's a real winner, Bill! I squint my eyes and the shapes of the boulders/reflections really do become greeked type. I'd put hieroglyphics in the title.
Definitely better with Rick's suggested crop. I think it's a great exploration of shape and form. The contrast with the foliage really gives the boulders emphasis. My eyes end up right at the intersection of water and land at the brightest bits. It's a lovely image to explore.   Posted: 07/08/2026 21:21:33

Hi Bill. Welcome again to the Group. I enjoy both the colors as well as the shapes and forms in this image. I am rarely able to get water to calm down for me as you did here - great reflection.

I did have the same comment as Rick about the right side. The skinny vertical tree (and its reflection) make it look a little like a separate image tacked on the right side. I might crop it just inside that tree as I don't think the far right section is as interesting as the larger portion left of that tree. Alternately if you want to keep it I might darken that skinny tree to reduce the feeling of separation.

I am curious how you decided where to put the symmetry line. It is not centered (which is generally not "recommended" but which I often like to do), but it is not as offset from center as is typically seen. Not badly placed - just curious the thinking.

The only other suggestion I have is that the central rock is quite bright and very interesting with its tilt and that of its reflection. It tends to hold me there perhaps more than desired. You might try darkening it a touch to see if it balances out the image and invites greater exploration.

Hi Bill, I also concur with Rick, and I hope you do not mind my suggestions. I love to play with these reflections and this one is a gem. I did crop out the right side and pumped up the colors (perhaps a bit much), and I eliminated the long tree, as a distraction. I also sharpened a bit the reflection. But the beauty of these reflectons is that they can be presented in any way you like; pointing, left, right up or down. Just an idea, which you most likely thought of yourself.   Posted: 07/12/2026 20:42:16
