Mount Batur Sunrise by Viren Bhatia

January 2025 - Mount Batur Sunrise

About the Image(s)

This image was taken from Mount Batur in Bali, Indonesia early in the morning during sunrise.

I wanted to capture the sunrise from Mount Batur which is an active volcano located in Bali. The image was taken at 24mm with my 24-70mm 2.8 Sony Lens using Sony Alpha 1 Camera. Aperture 6.3,ISO 100 & shutter speed 1/8 sec using a tripod.

I would have loved to have the lake seen but unfortunately I did not get a vantage point to capture the lake completely.

I liked the orange glow of the sun coming from behind the mountain.

Happy to receive any comments for improvement

Hi Viren. Happy New Year! What a spectacular view! The image definitely conveys the tropical feel and wildness that I associate with a volcano in Bali. The colors are amazing, and I think the fact that the lake is partially hidden adds to the intrigue. I particularly love the rays of light and mountain shadow in the sky.

I think there is room to lift the shadows a bit in the foreground jungle trees. That would give them a little more form, but also showcase how the light is just beginning to touch them.

I wondering - there is a strong black "line" running along the tops of the hills on the far side of the lake. Is that real or was that introduced somehow in your processing?

The only other suggestion I might make is to crop a little from the top and make the image more of a pano aspect ratio. I don't think the very top adds much, and the pano format makes it more of a window into the beautiful view. I took a quick cut at the crop and shadows correction below.

Hi Viren, Happy Hollidays! I would crop some of the sky out.   Posted: 01/14/2025 03:54:28

Hi Viren,
Happy New Year!
Thank you for sharing.
I like your attempt - the color is beautiful, and it has great sun rays. You captured this at the best timing, the sun is still behind the mountain but it gives a beautiful color and sun rays. Good shot!
Since it is shooting to the sun, the image turned out to be a bit dark for me. It might be better to brighten up the foregound since it is backlit by the sun rise. Unfortunately there was not cloud action but I need to keep the space for the image to breath in my opinion. Here is my attempt.
My person opinion, though.   Posted: 01/16/2025 09:41:12
